A standalone sequel, Wonder Woman 2 has officially been announced by Warner Bros. The movie which features actress Gal Gadot in the titular role already has a premiere date and it is happening on December 13, 2019.
Director of the first film, Patty Jenkins has yet to announce her involvement as of this writing but an agreement and official announcement is expected to happen soon. The first movie was a surprise success having surpassed the $800 million box office making it the highest grossing film directed by a woman. It has also become the highest grossing superhero origin film.
The first movie was set in 1918 towards the end of World War 2 although Diana Prince has already appeared in a more recent timeline in Zack Snyder’s 2016 movie,Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. She is also set to appear in Justice League which will be shown on November 17, 2017 together with Aquaman/Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa), The Flash/Barry Allen (Ezra Miller), Cyborg/Victor Stone (Ray Fisher), Superman/Clark Kent (Henry Cavill) and Batman/Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck).
No movie plot has been shared yet as well but many believe that a big time jump will happen. It is widely believed to happen at a time after the events on Justice League, or possibly in the 1980s. No other cast members have been confirmed to return.
The 2017 Wonder Woman film introduced Diana Prince as the daughter of Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen) who ruled over the Amazons in the hidden island of Themyscira. They are of mythological descent as a race of warrior women created by Zeus.
In 1918 she meets Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), an American pilot whom she rescues from a plane crash. They become romantically involved and fought against the Germans in hopes to stop the war. Ares (David Thewlis) who is believed to have caused the war among humans also appears and reveals Diana’s destiny.
