The recent legal drama going on between the Kardashians and Blac Chyna wasn't only surprising to fans, but to their lawyers as well! Blac Chyna's lawyer admitted that he was shocked to learn that Kim, Kourtney, and Khloe Kardashian's companies had filed an opposition to Chyna's (real name Angela White) request to trademark the name Angela Kardashian, and he says that he thinks it was probably some sort of mistake.
The news broke on Wednesday that the Kardashian sisters are legally opposing Blac Chyna's request to have her future name Angela Kardashian trademarked for entertainment and social media purposes. In an interview withPEOPLE, Chyna's lawyer Walter Mosley said that this is the first time in his years of filing trademark requests for Chyna that one has ever been opposed. He went on to guess that the Kardashians' opposition may have been the result of an error made by their legal teams, because he believes that if this issue were to go to court, it would be a clear win in Blac Chyna's favor.
The Kardashians, like Angela and my other clients are very protective of our marks, I think for us this is going to be a clear case win, because it's actually her name, it's not a poaching. I would hope that this is just a junior lawyer's error, who's just responding to everything and not really looking at who it's from or why it was filed. There's a softer side of this where Angela has to have a conversation with her family. But until I hear otherwise, I'm just going to proceed as I normally would with a lawsuit. I have 40 days to respond.
The opposition came from the companies of Kim Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian, and Khloe Kardashian, and reportedly stated that Blac Chyna trademarking the Kardashian name would injure its reputation and goodwill. Chyna's lawyer is confident that the opposition doesn't hold weight, and is presumably a misunderstanding. He argues that although Angela Kardashian isn't Chyna's legal name at the moment, it is a stage name she uses currently and will be her legal name once she marries her fiancéRob Kardashian.
Sure, it's not her legal name now, but it is certainly her stage name --- her next stage name and her legal name once the wedding is done. In the complaint they are not short or shy as to how they feel about Angela using the trademark. I'm hoping that it's just a big misunderstanding...
Blac Chyna and Rob Kardashian got engaged in April, after dating for a few months at the start of this year. The couple immediately attracted considerable media attention, given that Chyna has a somewhat rocky history with the Kardashian family and that her ex-fiancé Tyga was and is still currently dating Rob's half sister Kylie Jenner. Last month, Chyna and Rob welcomed their newborn daughter Dream Kardashianinto the family.
Blac Chyna's lawyer is saying that Chyna and the Kardashian family have been getting along great, which is another reason the opposition surprised him. Hopefully it will just turn out to be one big misunderstanding after all.
