WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: MOANA HOLDS NUMBER ONE, JACKIE IMPRESSES IN LIMITED RELEASE

Things were quiet at the box office this weekend, as the cinema world took a deep breath before the holiday awards season kicks into gear.

With no notable new competition this weekend Moana held the top spot, dipping 50% from its opening weekend, and adding $28 million to its domestic total of $119 million.

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them held at second place with $18 million for the weekend. At $183 million domestic it's still lagging behind the other Harry Potter Universe franchises, but pushed its way into the last spot for the top ten movies of the year to date. It will have to enjoy that spot while it lasts, as Rogue One is expected to knock it right back out before the year is over.

The one new movie this weekend fared poorly by genre standards. Low budget horror movies can often expect to make back their budget with change on opening weekend, but Incarnate and its minimal $5 million price tag opened with just $2.6 million.

Natalie Portman's latest movie, a biopic on Jacqueline Kennedy, opened in very limited release. Jackiebanked $55,000 per screen in just five venues, promising notable awards interest, though no guarantee for broader success.
